Choose Gusto when a small team prefers a software-led people and payroll experience. Choose RUN Powered by ADP when access to a broader service organization and defined escalation path is central to the purchase. This is an operating-model decision, not a contest between interface and reputation. The employer must understand who performs each task in ordinary and difficult weeks.
What the buyer is actually choosing
Gusto's published positioning makes sense for a buyer who wants payroll and adjacent employee workflows to feel like one product. RUN Powered by ADP makes sense for an employer that values a provider relationship spanning payroll and related services. Each can disappoint if purchased for the wrong reason.
For Gusto, examine self-service clarity, internal ownership, and the boundaries of connected people workflows. For RUN Powered by ADP, map implementation contacts, ongoing support, specialist queues, and escalation. With both, demand written answers about state setup, corrections, tax notices, record access, and termination of service.
Scenario: an architecture firm reaches a handoff point
An architecture firm has a small salaried team plus several hourly interns. A principal currently reviews payroll, but an office manager will assume preparation. The accountant wants stable reports, and leadership expects another office within a year. No one wants a payroll issue to depend on the principal's memory.
Gusto may fit if the office manager can own the product directly and employee workflows benefit from consolidation. RUN Powered by ADP may fit if the firm values a service structure during the handoff and expansion. The planned second office should be tested as a scenario, not used as an excuse to buy undefined breadth.
Evaluation plan for an ordinary and bad run
Ask each provider to address two scripted cases:
- For the ordinary run, enter regular salary, approved intern hours, a reimbursement, and a new-hire effective date.
- Separate preparation, review, and release permissions between the office manager and principal.
- Inspect the payroll register, accounting output, employee record, and year-end access path.
- For the bad run, introduce an omitted earning after processing and a fictional agency notice.
- Record who receives each issue, expected evidence, escalation steps, and customer-visible case history.
- Request export procedures for payroll history and employee data at contract end.
This publication has not run those cases. A buyer can execute them to turn sales descriptions into documented evidence.
Edge case: support ownership becomes ambiguous
An hourly intern's corrected time changes pay and a previously posted accounting entry. Gusto may route the issue through a product support process, while RUN Powered by ADP may involve a service representative or specialist path. The buyer should not assume either is faster or better without testing the actual route offered to that account.
Ask whether the provider corrects the payroll record, filing data, payment, or only guides the employer. Confirm what remains for the accountant. FLSA recordkeeping and government wage-reporting duties exist independently from support resolution. Closing a ticket is not evidence that every required correction is complete.
Operating-model decision criteria and conclusion
Favor Gusto when internal operators want direct control, adjacent people workflows are genuinely useful, and exception handling is transparent. Favor RUN Powered by ADP when implementation and service depth matter more, and the offered support path is documented clearly enough to audit.
Compare implementation ownership, administrator roles, state onboarding, bad-run escalation, accounting reports, employee access, year-end records, exports, and future-office handling. The better choice is the model the firm can operate after its original payroll expert steps away.
Ask the incoming office manager to lead the final walkthrough. A handoff that works only with the departing expert present has not been validated.
