Prices are the entry list prices each vendor publishes on its own US pricing page, read on Oct 27, 2026. They exclude taxes, payment processing unless stated, hardware, add-ons and negotiated discounts; a promotion appears only in the notes, labeled as one. Prices change. No vendor paid for a place or a price in this table.

Verdict: OnPay for a business that needs payroll done; Rippling for a company that wants payroll to be one module of a system that runs every employee's setup.

These two are built on different ideas. OnPay is payroll first: one published plan, every filing included, HR and time tracking as optional add-ons with their own prices. Rippling is a platform: its pricing page lists HR, IT (identity and access, device management), payroll and finance products on one system, priced per employee for the platform and per product on top, with payroll among the products it quotes. We read both pricing pages on October 28, 2026. Nothing here comes from a hands-on trial.

What the prices tell you

OnPayRippling
Published price$49 a month + $6 per worker for Payroll EssentialsPlatform "starts at $8 per employee per month, with a monthly base fee"; base fee not shown
Payroll priceIncluded in that price"Depends on the number of employees and the products and services you select"; quote required
Twenty workers, before add-ons$49 + 20 x $6 = $169 a monthNot computable: a starting rate per employee, an unpublished base fee and a quoted payroll price
What is included in payrollW-2s, 1099s, year-end filings; federal, state and local filings; unlimited pay runs; any number of statesNot itemized on the pricing page
Add-onsHR, time tracking, workers' comp, 401(k), health insurance, each priced or quoted separatelyOther products priced per employee; total depends on products chosen

The twenty-worker line shows the trap in comparing headline prices. Rippling's $8 is a starting rate per employee that comes with a base fee it does not publish and a payroll price it quotes, so no comparable total exists without a quote; OnPay's $169 is the payroll bill.

Why OnPay takes the verdict for small teams

Under about twenty employees, most businesses need pay run correctly, taxes filed in every state where someone works, and year-end forms. OnPay does all of that at a price you can read, with no implementation fee. Rippling's payroll price is not published, so it cannot be compared without a quote; what its platform adds is everything around payroll.

When Rippling is worth it

Rippling makes sense when hiring is fast and each new hire triggers work in several systems: a device to set up, access to grant, benefits to enroll, payroll to start, and the reverse on departure. Its pricing page lists products for each of those jobs; if one system handles them, the platform fee can replace admin time and other subscriptions. That is a decision about your operating system, not your payroll, and it needs a quote to price.

The deciding test

Count the systems you touch when someone joins: payroll, benefits, device, email, apps. If it is one or two, choose OnPay. If it is four or more and you hire every month, ask Rippling for a quote covering payroll plus the products you would use, and compare it with OnPay plus the tools you already pay for. For how Rippling compares with another published-price payroll service, see this comparison.
